Synchrotron and SSC Emission and the Blast-Wave Model of Gamma-Ray Bursts

چکیده
We investigate the dynamics and radiation from a relativistic blast-wave which decelerates as it sweeps up ambient matter. The bulk kinetic energy of the blast-wave shell is converted into internal energy by the process of accreting external matter. If it takes the form of non-thermal electrons and magnetic fields, then this internal energy will be emitted as synchrotron and synchrotron self-Compton radiation. We perform analytic and numerical calculations for the deceleration and radiative processes and present time-resolved spectra throughout the evolution of the blast-wave. We also examine the dependence of the burst spectra and light curves on various parameters describing the magnetic field and non-thermal electron distributions. We find that for bursts such as GRB 910503, GRB 910601 and GRB 910814, the spectral shapes of the prompt gammaray emission at the peaks in νFν strongly constrain the magnetic fields in these bursts to be well below (∼< 10 −2) the equipartition values. These calculations are also considered in the context of the afterglow emission from the recently detected gamma-ray burst counterparts.

High Energy Afterglow Emission from Gamma-Ray Bursts
We calculate the very high energy (sub-GeV to TeV) inverse Compton emission of GRB afterglows. We argue that this emission provides a powerful test of the currently accepted afterglow model. We focus on two processes: synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) emission within the afterglow blast wave, and external inverse Compton (EIC) emission which occurs when flare photons (produced by an internal proce...
متن کاملExtended Power-law Decays in Batse Gamma-ray Bursts: Signatures of External Shocks?
The connection between Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) and their afterglows is currently not well understood. Afterglow models of synchrotron emission generated by external shocks in the GRB fireball model predict emission detectable in the gamma-ray regime (>∼ 25 keV). In this paper, we present a temporal and spectral analysis of a subset of BATSE GRBs with smooth extended emission tails to search for...
متن کاملAfterglow emission from pair-loaded blast waves in gamma-ray bursts
The MeV radiation front of gamma-ray bursts creates copious e pairs as it propagates through an ambient medium. The created pairs enrich the leptonic component of the medium by a large factor at distances R < Rload ∼ 10 cm from the burst center. The following blast wave sweeps up the pair-rich medium and then emits the observed afterglow radiation. We find that the afterglow has a “memory” of e...
متن کاملPrompt High Energy γ-Ray Emission From the Synchrotron Self-Compton Process in the Reverse Shocks of γ-Ray Bursts
In the standard scenario of the fireball model of gamma-ray bursts(GRBs), the huge initial energy release produces a relativistic blast wave expanding into the external medium and a reverse shock moving into and heating the fireball ejecta. We calculate the high energy gamma-ray emission due to inverse Compton scattering of the synchrotron photons from relativistic electrons in the reverse shoc...
متن کاملTime-integrated Gamma-ray Burst Synchrotron Spectra from Blast Wave/cloud Interactions
We show that the spectral shape of the low energy tails found for the time-integrated spectra of gamma-ray bursts, even in the absence of strong synchrotron cooling, can be significantly softer than the νFν ∝ ν4/3 asymptote predicted by synchrotron shock models. As we have noted in a previous work, blast wave deceleration via interaction with ambient material causes the characteristic electron ...
